Removal of discrete ICT lesson at sons First school – I hate this but I suppose it links to the idea that IT is in everything we do – a medium or transliteracy (Kress 2005 Thomas et al 2007) The method of access to information to create knowledge

“technology is not a ‘tool’ – it actually drives change and creates society”

I believe this is the truth However, as Thomas et al 2007 discussed, any new initiative drives and creates change in society. The example used was using communication to change from hunting solo to hunting in groups, enabled change because there was left over food for sale or swap.

Technology is a medium for communication and it is the collaboration associated with greater access to communication that is creating the change?

Week 3 summary – Multi-modal learning http://edc13.education.ed.ac.uk/anabeld/2013/02/03/week-3-summary/ http://edc13.education.ed.ac.uk/anabeld/2013/02/03/week-3-summary/#comments Sun, 03 Feb 2013 19:28:50 +0000 Anabel Drought http://edc13.education.ed.ac.uk/anabeld/?p=137 My Blog this week focused on the ideas of Kress 2005 and the notion of order and entry points and how this has changed with the introduction of multi-modal technology. Although I am comfortable with multi-modality, the change to the notion of order made me feel anxious as I was unsure of which Entry point to take and I felt I may miss something. Although I don’t agree with Prensky’s (2001) digital native I wonder if they are more flexible than I am over starting points.

EdcMOOC – The first thing that strikes me is the feeling of enormity and excitment.

There is a buzz about the whole thing and lots of commentary about arrival and participation, students locating themselves as players within the course.

#edmooc Hi All, I’m Sue Watling from Lincoln, UK, http://staff.lincoln.ac.uk/swatling , am on #oldsmooc and looking forward to MOOCing around here :-)

Yet others express feelings of isolation which is perhaps more to do with locating themselves within the course.

describing modes mediums literacies and transliteracies
medium – email, video
mode – Speech, drawing, writing
literacies – Speech, drawing, writing
transliteracies – social, cultural economic method of sharing

Basically from the beginning of time humans have been using literacies to communicate either through speech, drawing, or writing. They have moved on and evolved their societies with the passing on of information to one another.
Blackmore (2008) “Language is a parasite that we’ve adapted to, not something that was there originally for our genes, on this view. And like most parasites, it can begin dangerous, but then it co-evolves and adapts, and we end up with a symbiotic relationship with this new parasite”
Thomas et al (2007) talks of the modes of communication and describes this evolution :
Through speech – arranging group hunts for larger prey
Through drawings developed bartering system and sales of excess meat
Through the alphabet – development of the roman empire
Through email – immediate global communication

Kress 2005 Talks of mediums are just reproductions of modes of communciation e.g.g writing drawing, sound and states reproduced through e.g. email, video etc.

Both appear to state the original forms of communication are still present and doing the same thing but are being replicated through a different medium

Representation http://edc13.education.ed.ac.uk/anabeld/2013/01/31/representing-knowledge/ http://edc13.education.ed.ac.uk/anabeld/2013/01/31/representing-knowledge/#comments Thu, 31 Jan 2013 20:52:00 +0000 Anabel Drought http://edc13.education.ed.ac.uk/anabeld/?p=116 Culture is represented in many formats, and these formats have changed over time but still remian essentially a imitation or replication of an original idea. Kress & van Leeuwen, (1996) a) that communication is always and inevitably multimodal; and (b) that each of the modes available for representation in a culture provides specific potentials and limitations for communication. The way in which something is created, imitated and replicated is part of the success of the original idea.

If for example the Gangnam style song had been represented as a poem or a written song in a book. It is very unlikely it would have been watched and shared across the globe as it would have been inaccessible. However, with a catchy sound track, fun singer and amusing video it has become a global phenomena. “writing is giving way, is being displaced by image” (Kress 2005) I don’t agree that this is a dystopian effect, dumming down to appeal to the common denominator. I think it is positive and more inclusive and still allows people to add their own interpretation, fill in the gaps and make their own connections and links. Kress (2005) was right to suggest that new media makes it possible to use the mode that seems most apt for the purposes of representation and communication – so why not?

Which mode of representation do you find easiest to access and most enjoyable?

low-tech “v” hi-tech http://edc13.education.ed.ac.uk/anabeld/2013/01/29/low-tech-v-hi-tech/ http://edc13.education.ed.ac.uk/anabeld/2013/01/29/low-tech-v-hi-tech/#comments Tue, 29 Jan 2013 20:52:37 +0000 Anabel Drought http://edc13.education.ed.ac.uk/anabeld/?p=96 Often we think hi-tech is better, it is the future, it is fast and efficient and sleek and has something added to it. Watch for example this video of Snowboarders in the Alps – the addition of neon lighting in the dark makes it amazing – it would have been amazing without it but it just adds another level to impress us with

LED-covered snowboarder lights up the French Alps – video | Travel | guardian.co.uk.

However, this low tech version of Gangnam Style is even better than the real one – but why? In this version we are placing more value on the human creative effort more than digital creativity of a video.

Yet this even more hi-tech one is also very impressive

gangnam vid

We find that more and more often, the original is being copied and recreated in different styles with the addition of technology or without, but replicated and passed on and shared. The snowboarders were shared in the newspaper and the Gangnam style was on a friend Facebook wall and the robots were at the BETT conference 2013. These videos are good examples of Jenkins (2001) multiple forms of media converging and “leading us toward a digital renaissance — a period of transition and transformation that will affect all aspects of our lives”
This repetition and alteration of media and activity is social communicational currency which we trade and share with one another to maintain and strengthen relationships with each other without actually having to be in close proximity to one another
