It's visually very appealing and this really tempts people in. Indeed there is so many new tools out there to use. This is my first attempt with thinglink and I was surprised to find that it can be such an effective tool. However, I think the key to thinglink is the image one chooses. I was lucky to have visited Sol Lewitt's exhibition at Mass MOCA at New England in the summer and took loads of pictures. And edcMooc students like yourself have created some really inspiring work, which I could link them to the image. Without these data and content, the overall effect would have been very different. I do prefer this to the mindmapping concept with neuron-like shapes. I think the latter assumes that things will naturally grow out of each neuron, but in reality , there is a lot of work involved in making a community work. In the case of Moocs, the concept of connectivism, where knowledge can be found everywhere, from different individuals/sources. The starting point is more like Sol Lewitt's lines as seen above, and then it can move on to the more 'growth-like' metaphors.
