I'm reminded of a brilliant segment of the Daily Show (US news satire) where in their typical clever patchwork style they showed how politicians invoked "simpler, better times" that just so happened to co-incide with when they themselves were about 5 years old. ie: it was simpler because you were a toddler and didn't understand anything about the world...
