Sometimes I'd swear that the programmers are having a laugh at our expense with italics and strange slanting fonts! Recently I saw a letter and a number one and the number was so blurred or tiny I had really problems getting on do I also need to have 20:20 vision to be able to access your site? Are my inadequacies as a human blurring the boundary between pure / fully functioning humans and computers? I was told at some conference that they were used to help decipher old text from ancient books, I'm not sure if it is true, but it gives it another purpose than just to block non humans. But here the separating, seems more like filtering, and connecting: human and machine dialogue. The symbol itself conveys the interconnectivity, what a great choice. In view of the symbol's history (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Number_sign) - it is relatively new (1900) - amazing the weight of symbolic meaning it now carries.
