I love this quote [above]. Thought it fitting given the ethnographic course content that we are currently covering. Highlighting the value of the reflexive methodological approach.

I went looking for this quote in context, because I didn’t quite get the force of it above – what Foucault is saying, I think, is that a real understanding of history innoculates us against wanting to return to it? I’m reminded of a brilliant segment of the Daily Show (US news satire) where in their typical clever patchwork style they showed how politicians invoked “simpler, better times” that just so happened to co-incide with when they themselves were about 5 years old. ie: it was simpler because you were a toddler and didn’t understand anything about the world…
